November 2003: Anne Lamott's OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

I have a TBR (To Be Read) pile stacked miles high with various suspense novels, but in honor of being a new mom, I just completed Anne Lamott's OPEARTING INSTRUCTIONS, a wonderfully witty account of her son's first year. If Lamott's BIRD BY BIRD is a classic for aspiring writers, then Operating Instructions is definitely a classic for aspiring moms. I love her account of how she can remember every single detail of JFK's assassination, but just that morning she got into the shower with her underwear on. Or better yet, on the post-birth body: "When I lie on my side in bed, my stomach lies politely beside me, like a puppy." Personally, every time I look in the mirror, the jingle for Jell-O runs through my head.
