October 2005: Jennifer Weiner's GOOD IN BED

Spending a lot of quality time on planes lately, I'm finally catching up on my enormous TBR pile. My favorite discovery thus far: Jennifer Weiner's GOOD IN BED. Talk about a refreshing, candid heroine! Not only is Cannie a "plus sized" person, she's also witty, intelligent, poignant, and surprisingly edgy. Positioned as a comedy, GIB is definitely a fast, breezy read that'll put a smile on your face. But it's also far smarter than your average, run-of-the mill chick lit. A lot of Cannie's humor is fueled by rage-against the father who abandoned her family, against a society that is blatantly biased against her body type, and against the boyfriend she thought might be the life her love, but who is now exploiting their relationship in his monthly magazine column, detailing his adventures as a "chubby chaser." You'll laugh reading this book. But you'll also find yourself pausing a lot, nodding at Cannie's astute observations. While she has learned to use humor as a weapon, it doesn't change the fundamental truths that life isn't fair, and no one ever really recovers from the loss of a parent.
