October 2003: Janet Evanovich's Hard Eight and Patricia Gaffney's Flight Lessons

I read Janet Evanovich's HARD EIGHT in August, and giggled all the way to Oregon . My husband has already declared I'm not allowed to bring TO THE NINES with me on our Christmas flight; he's tired of being seated next to the grinning idiot. I think he's just jealous that he's never had this much fun with his golf magazines.

I've now spent a month reading the same novel, FLIGHT LESSONS by Patricia Gaffney. Blame the baby, not the novel, because FLIGHT LESSONS is a truly gorgeous book. I'm always in awe of writers such as Pat. One the one hand, there's not much happening in her novel. On the other hand, you can't wait to see what's going to happen next. Her book centers on a family trying to come to terms with past betrayals as the niece returns home to help rebuild the family business, a restaurant. The characters are so real, you feel as if you've personally met each one. The relationships are honest. No one is magically right and no one is magically wrong. Instead, the book centers on all the degrees in between. It's an incredibly gripping read, so let's hope Grace sleeps sometime soon so I can reach the end. Oh, and speaking of Grace, another fabulous Pat Gaffney novel is THE SAVING GRACES. I highly recommend it.
